Job Purpose
The Electronics Senior Technician will perform routine and ad-hoc maintenance activities according to prescribed management programmes within SAFARI-1.
The successful candidate will perform fault finding on instrumentation systems and subsystems relating to SAFARI-1 nuclear and process systems.
The role includes reporting to the Instrumentation Section Head to evaluate and review the effectiveness of the maintenance programme.
The candidate will support the FE group with implementation and commissioning of projects.
The successful candidate will also assist with the management of instrumentation maintenance personnel and tasks to maintain a high standard of maintenance within the SAFARI-1 reactor.
Requirements
Applicants must have a National Diploma in Electronics.
Applicants must have at least five years’ applicable experience in an electronic circuit troubleshooting environment.
Applicants must have thorough knowledge of the functioning, capabilities, programming, maintenance and repair of Programmable Logic Controllers.
Applicants must have experience in PC board level repair work, PC board repair and soldering.
Electronic, computer and process control experience is required.
Applicants must be computer literate, preferably with good programming skills.
Applicants must have a good understanding of the functioning and capabilities of PLCs.
Applicants must be medically fit, as the successful candidate will be required to register as a radiation, chemical and noise worker.

Key Performance Areas
The successful candidate will help maintain reactor and irradiation facilities, including IPR rigs, beam lines, pneumatics, Ringas and silicon rig.
Duties include supporting the efficiency and reliability of reactor systems and irradiation facilities.
The candidate will assist the Instrumentation Section Head with management of the instrumentation maintenance workshop and subordinates.
The role includes planning and coordinating maintenance activities and job cards according to SAR specifications, maintenance programmes, legislative requirements and regulatory requirements.
The successful candidate will ensure scheduled maintenance activities during shutdown periods are completed on time and accurately.
The candidate will attend to breakdowns that require immediate attention and practical technical solutions.
Duties include developing, implementing and maintaining maintenance schedules to prevent unplanned downtime.
The successful candidate will coordinate scheduled maintenance, breakdown maintenance and emergency repairs to minimise production downtime.
The role may require responding after hours to limit plant downtime and keep the plant operational within safe and acceptable limits.
The successful candidate may be placed on routine standby duty according to NECSA overtime and standby duty policy.
Additional duties include performing specialised tasks on the maintenance request programme.
The candidate will plan and perform maintenance according to MPR and ad-hoc databases.
The successful candidate will ensure that quick and accurate calibrations are performed during shutdown periods.
The role includes supporting maintenance on radiation facilities and assisting with technical investigations and fault finding on plant equipment, facilities and commercial processes.
The candidate will ensure that maintenance equipment is in good condition and use calibrated equipment when required.
The successful candidate will administer maintenance stores to ensure critical items are available and controlled.
The role includes supporting replacement, refurbishment and upgrading of reactor plant equipment according to schedule.
The candidate will support ageing management, plant upgrades, modifications and new installations.
The successful candidate will support modification of reactor components and equipment and assist with solving engineering and facility problems.
The role includes supporting regulatory compliance, reporting non-conformances and incidents, and following up corrective and preventative actions.
The candidate will maintain documentation and records of completed maintenance work, including updating instrumentation drawings.
The successful candidate will support compliance audits, attend SHEQ sessions and support NECSA behavioural-based safety systems.
The role includes assisting with purchasing materials and spares for upgrades, modifications and non-routine maintenance.
The candidate will manage checklists and ensure weekly, monthly, yearly and two-yearly checklist tasks are completed accurately and timeously.
