Job Purpose
The purpose of the Handyman post is to assist the skilled Chief Handyman, Artisan, Supervisor or Section Manager with a variety of maintenance and docking activities.
The successful candidate will help ensure that facilities, machines, tools and materials are ready for use in order to meet divisional objectives.
Requirements
Applicants must have Grade 9.
A forklift licence and cherry picker licence will be an added advantage.
Applicants must have at least one year of experience in an industrial or similar environment.
Special Proficiency and Skills
Applicants must be able to assist skilled workers in the execution of their duties.
Knowledge of general hand and power tools is required.
Applicants must understand 5S cleaning standards.
Basic safety practices are required.
Applicants must be able to work at heights and in confined spaces.
Applicants must be willing to work overtime.
Basic knowledge of safety and health regulations is required.
Key Performance Areas
The successful candidate will transport tools, equipment and supplies safely to job sites to support efficient work progress.
Duties include cleaning equipment as guided and directed.
The candidate will safely use basic hand and power tools while assisting workers.
The successful candidate will collect and return items from various holding depots or workshops within the Dockyard.
The role includes assisting with docking and undocking vessels at the Dry Dock and Synchrolift under the guidance of the Dock Master.
The candidate will assist artisans with building docking cradles at the drydock and synchrolift facilities.
Additional duties include assisting with maintenance on bogies, long arms and sock blocks.
The successful candidate will keep work areas uncluttered and ensure tools and equipment are secured at the end of each shift.
The candidate will perform general cleaning of workshop and mess areas by wiping spills, sweeping, vacuuming and removing waste.
Duties include monitoring consumable stock levels and informing the administrator or technical supervisor of requirements.
The successful candidate will provide transport and lifting support by driving a forklift and cherry picker where applicable.
The role includes mopping cement, tile and epoxy floors with suitable detergent.
The candidate will clean ablution facilities.
Additional cleaning duties include dusting window ledges, sills, skirting, walls, office furniture and telephones.
The candidate will dust cornices, moulding, cupboards, light fittings, air extractor vents, doors and door frames.
The successful candidate will spot clean marks from light switches, power points, fridges, microwaves, doors and walls.
The candidate will remove waste for disposal.
