The Office of the Chief Justice invites suitably qualified applicants to apply for the latest vacancies based at the Eastern Cape Division of the High Court in Mthatha and the Northern Cape Division of the High Court in Kimberley. Principal Court Interpreter Ref No: 2026/17/OCJ

Salary: R413 001 – R486 501 per annum, Level 08

Requirements

Applicants must have a National Diploma in Legal Interpreting or an equivalent qualification at NQF Level 6 with 360 credits as recognised by SAQA.

Alternatively, applicants with Grade 12 and at least ten years’ practical experience in Court Interpreting may also be considered.

Applicants must have at least two years’ experience as a Court Interpreter and two years’ supervisory experience.

Proficiency in English, isiXhosa and either isiZulu or Sesotho is required. A valid driver’s licence will be an added advantage.

Required knowledge and skills include knowledge of court proceedings, cultural diversity, policies, prescripts and legislation, Batho Pele principles, OCJ principles, communication skills, listening skills, computer literacy, problem-solving, interpersonal relations, planning and organising, people management, typing skills and customer service orientation.

Duties

The successful candidate will render interpreting services in high-profile and complex matters.

Duties include interpreting in criminal, civil and labour court matters, supervising court interpreters, mentoring junior and senior interpreters, managing performance agreements, preparing replacement schedules, translating legal documents and exhibits, researching source documents, checking and revising translations, procuring foreign language and casual interpreters, authorising payments, developing terminology databases and supervising staff.

Requirements

Applicants must have Grade 12. No experience is required.

An LLB Degree will serve as an added advantage.

Required knowledge and skills include confidentiality in government, research skills, verbal and written communication, minute-taking, report writing, computer literacy, creative and analytical thinking, decision-making, time management, administration, problem-solving, organising and customer service orientation.

Duties

The successful candidate will conduct legal research for the Regional Court.

Duties include researching topics requested by the Regional Court President or Chief Magistrate, downloading cases and judgments, distributing legal updates and amendments to relevant legislation, and supporting administration functions.

The candidate will also compile court performance statistics, verify and validate statistics, support court performance reports, assist with case flow management, submit case flow challenge reports, compile PEEC, REEC and DEEC court performance reports, and provide support to the Regional Court Registrar and assistant registrars.
