Post Title: Assistant Meteorological Technician (x2)

Ref No: OC 07/2025
Contract Duration: Approximately 15 months
Salary: R269,499 per annum (plus 37% in lieu of benefits)

Minimum Requirements:

  • National Diploma in Natural Sciences or a National Weather Certificate with Grade 12
  • 0–2 years of relevant experience in weather observation
  • Knowledge of Automatic Weather Stations and WMO/ICAO standards
  • Ability to work shifts, including weekends and public holidays
  • Physically fit and mentally prepared for remote, extreme environments

Key Duties:

  • Conduct surface meteorological observations and upper-air balloon releases
  • Maintain weather equipment and conduct data quality control
  • Assist with base logistics and comply with SAWS protocols
  • Participate in environmental and safety duties at Gough Island base

Post Title: Senior Meteorological Technician

Ref No: OC 08/2025
Contract Duration: Approximately 15 months
Salary: R325,101 per annum (plus 37% in lieu of benefits)

Minimum Requirements:

  • BSc/BTech in Natural Sciences or equivalent
  • At least 1 year of experience in meteorological observation
  • Or: Grade 12 with National Weather Certificate + 5 years’ experience
  • Previous island experience is advantageous
  • Strong project management and team leadership skills

Key Duties:

  • Supervise Assistant Meteorological Technicians and assign tasks
  • Oversee atmospheric observation projects and ensure WMO compliance
  • Conduct equipment maintenance, data verification, and reporting
  • Support logistical, administrative, and base-wide activities

Compulsory Pre-deployment Conditions

  • Mandatory training at SAWS in Cape Town
  • No return option to South Africa until October 2026
  • Rigorous medical and psychometric assessment required
  • Must be prepared to work long hours in extreme and isolated conditions
  • Ability to live in small groups for extended periods is essential
