Responsibilities

  • Command the vessel in line with national/international maritime regulations and company procedures.
  • Maintain vessel readiness and safety, including certifications, navigation planning, bunkers, food, and water.
  • Enforce health, safety, and environmental protection policies.
  • Report deficiencies, coordinate dry-docking, and ensure compliance with the Safety Management System (SMS).
  • Supervise cargo handling, voyage execution, and GMDSS communications.
  • Ensure legal compliance with MSA, MLC, STCW, POPIA, and MLRA.
  • Lead and motivate crewmembers while managing work/rest compliance and operational security.

Requirements

  • South African citizen with a valid passport.
  • Valid SAMSA Certificate of Competency as Master < 500GT (Near Coastal) – STCW Reg. II/3.
  • Minimum:
    • 2 years as Chief Navigational Officer < 500GT or
    • 1 year as Master < 500GT
  • Valid SAMSA Medical Certificate (no limitations).
  • Fluent in English (spoken and written).
  • Strong ship-handling and leadership skills.
  • Team player with high standards for safety and professionalism.
  • Clean criminal record and willingness to undergo a background check.
  • Must comply with strict zero-tolerance alcohol and drug policies.
