Requirements

Applicants must have a Grade 12 or Senior Certificate and a BProc or LLB Degree.

Applicants must have five yearsโ€™ relevant working experience in the legal environment, of which three years must be in a supervisory capacity.

Computer literacy, analytical skills, problem-solving skills, communication skills, research skills, report writing skills and presentation skills are essential.

Applicants must have in-depth knowledge and understanding of the Constitution, Correctional Services Act, PAJA, POPIA, Criminal Procedure Act, Law of Evidence, interpretation of statutes and other legal frameworks governing the correctional environment and public service.

Proficiency in English and at least one other official language is required.

Applicants must have the ability to write analytically. A valid driverโ€™s licence is essential, and applicants must be willing to travel.

Admission as an attorney or advocate will be an added advantage.

Duties

The successful candidate will oversee that all mandatory reporting requirements, as required by legislation, are met by the Department of Correctional Services.

Duties include monitoring, enquiring and evaluating reports received on all inmates in terms of Section 95D of the Correctional Services Act.

The candidate will develop strategies, policies, standard operating procedures and systems for dealing with mandatory reports and record keeping.

The successful candidate will also write reports and make recommendations on systemic problems and practices to ensure proper administration of mandatory reports by the Department of Correctional Services.

Additional duties include training and educating staff on mandatory reporting matters, reporting on unit activities to the Deputy Director: Complaints and Mandatory Reporting, managing and coordinating relationships with external stakeholders, supervising senior case officers and clerks, and performing other tasks as directed by the Deputy Director or Director.
