Requirements
Applicants must have a Grade 12 certificate and a BSc or National Diploma with Botany, Agronomy, Horticulture, Agriculture as a major subject, or a relevant qualification.
Compulsory registration with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions as a Certified Natural Scientist is required.
Applicants must have a minimum of three years’ post-qualification experience in botany, horticulture, agronomy, agriculture or conservation of plant genetic resources.
Required knowledge includes conservation and sustainable use principles, plant methodology, plant collection strategies, seed storage, seed processing and data management.
Required skills include planning, problem-solving, research, computer literacy, communication, organising and the ability to travel nationally and regionally. A driver’s licence is required.
Duties
The successful candidate will perform technical and scientific functions related to ex situ conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture.
Duties include processing collected and harvested material, cleaning, fumigation, counting, packaging, labelling and storing accessions, maintaining material planted in shade houses or field trials, and assisting with characterisation activities.
The candidate will also support in situ and on-farm conservation projects, community seed banks, plant collection missions, germination testing, moisture content analysis, safe duplication of material, Material Transfer Agreement requests, research data collection and reporting to national, regional and international bodies.

Applicants must have a BSc Agric in Animal Production or Animal Science, BTech in Animal Science, or Advanced Diploma in Animal Science.
Registration with SACNASP is required.
Applicants must have two years’ relevant experience.
Required knowledge includes the Animal Improvement Act, 1998, Act 62 of 1998, related Acts and regulations, animal production, animal husbandry, legal document protocol, hard filing for registers required by the Act, livestock industry processes, imports, exports and reproduction operators.
Required skills include creative and innovative thinking, problem-solving, written and verbal communication, planning, organising, evaluation, computer literacy, law enforcement, report writing and the ability to deal directly with the livestock industry. Applicants must be willing to work overtime.
Duties
The successful candidate will provide technical and regulatory advice on animal products, including live animals and genetic material, in line with the Animal Improvement Act.
Duties include providing technical support to ensure genetic integrity of animals, advising and training farmers and stakeholders on breeding standards, evaluating donor animals, monitoring packaging, labelling and storage of genetic material, and supporting import and export control of animal products.
The candidate will also assist with permits for live animals, semen, ova, eggs and embryos, evaluate genetic profiles, confirm donor animal approvals, support registration of import agents, liaise with clients and the livestock industry, engage with academic and research institutions, participate in breeders’ society meetings, supervise junior staff, maintain databases and compile monthly reports.
