Adjunct Academic, College of Science, Engineering and Technology Ref No: AA: CSET/2026
UNISA is looking for Adjunct Academics to contribute to teaching, learning, assessment, student support and academic engagement within the College of Science, Engineering and Technology.
The successful candidates will support modules in formal qualifications at NQF Levels 5 to 7 and assist the university in delivering quality distance, blended and online learning.
Purpose of the Position
The purpose of the Adjunct Academic position is to contribute to UNISA’s teaching, learning and research goals by providing high-quality instruction, assessment and academic support to students.
The incumbent will bring professional or academic expertise to improve the student learning experience within a specific discipline or programme.
Key Performance Areas
Student Support and Engagement
The successful candidate will offer academic guidance, consultation and mentorship to students. Duties include using different teaching approaches to support student engagement, identifying students who need additional academic assistance, monitoring engagement data and responding to student queries effectively and on time.
Teaching and Facilitation
The Adjunct Academic will deliver lectures, tutorials or seminars according to the prescribed curriculum and academic calendar.
Duties include preparing teaching materials, lesson plans and learning resources, supporting module teaching at NQF Levels 5 to 7, contributing to curriculum review and development, conducting online classes through the Learning Management System and promoting interactive learning.
The candidate must ensure compliance with the College Quality Assurance Framework and Service Charter.
Assessment and Feedback
The successful candidate will mark and grade assignments, tests, projects and examinations according to academic standards and rubrics.
Duties include maintaining accurate student performance records, providing constructive feedback, and participating in moderation and quality assurance processes.
Analytics and Intervention
The candidate will access and interpret student performance reports from platforms such as myUnisa and analytics dashboards.
Duties include monitoring student engagement, performance trends, assessment submissions and learning barriers. The candidate will also identify at-risk students, develop academic support plans, conduct follow-up sessions and provide additional learning resources where needed.
Academic Collaboration
The successful candidate will work with the Tuition Support and Facilitation of Learning Department, Instructional Support and Services, Course Coordinators and Chairs of Department.
Duties include coordinating student interventions, referring students for counselling where required and sharing feedback to support module improvement.
General Qualifications and Experience
Applicants must have a relevant postgraduate qualification, preferably a Master’s or Doctoral Degree, in the discipline of instruction.
Applicants must demonstrate academic or professional expertise in the relevant subject area. Registration with a relevant professional body will be required where applicable.
Prior experience in teaching, tutoring or academic support in a higher education environment will be advantageous. Familiarity with blended or online learning environments is also required.
