Business Intelligence Specialist

Reference: HDA BIS001
Reporting Line: Chief Technology & Information Officer

Job Purpose

To use Business Intelligence (BI) technologies to process, analyse, report on, and track business information at both operational and strategic levels in support of the HDA’s mandate.


Key Performance Areas

1. Data Acquisition, Integration & Quality Assurance

  • Establish data requirements with internal and external clients
  • Identify and source data through partnerships and agreements
  • Verify data reliability, consistency and accuracy
  • Integrate data from multiple sources into a unified data framework

2. Database Design and Administration

  • Design, develop and support databases for BI and GIS reporting
  • Work with IT to install, configure, secure and maintain database servers
  • Ensure database backups and restorations are conducted daily
  • Collaborate with GIS teams to build spatial geodatabases

3. Data Analysis and Interpretation

  • Analyse raw data and produce information products for business units
  • Use GIS software for spatial data analysis
  • Apply statistical tools such as Microsoft Excel and R for large datasets
  • Develop spatial and statistical models to support decision-making
  • Interpret findings and develop actionable recommendations

4. Data Visualisation

  • Develop dashboards and infographics using tools such as Tableau and Excel PowerPivot
  • Visualise spatial data using GIS tools
  • Prepare presentations and communicate analytical insights
  • Train colleagues on best practices in data visualisation

5. Values Management

Skills and Competencies

  • Advanced knowledge of Business Intelligence, data management and visualisation
  • Strong statistical, analytical and SQL skills
  • Programming and scripting for statistical and spatial modelling
  • Experience with GIS and database-driven environments
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Willingness to travel as required (valid driver’s licence essential)

Qualifications and Experience

  • Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, GeoInformatics, Statistics, Engineering or related field
  • Proficiency in Microsoft SQL Server, Excel Pivot Tables, Power Pivot and Microsoft Access
  • Experience with Tableau and integration with statistical packages such as R
  • More than five (5) years’ experience in database design, data analysis and visualisation
  • More than three (3) years’ experience in GIS and statistical modelling
  • Proven ability to translate client needs into information products and services
