Meteorological Trainer: Regional Training Centre

Minimum Requirements

  • A 4-year tertiary qualification in Atmospheric Sciences or Meteorology (e.g., BSc Honours).
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in meteorological observation practices.
  • Excellent proficiency in weather observations, including Aviation Observer Competencies.
  • Knowledge of climate data quality control.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Knowledge of electronics (advantage).

Key Performance Areas

  • Deliver theoretical and practical meteorology training at SAWS Regional Training Centre (RTC).
  • Develop, enhance and facilitate courses aligned with:
    • WMO Basic Instruction Package (BIP-MT)
    • Occupational Certificates (Meteorological Technician & Aviation Meteorological Observer)
    • National Certificate: Weather Observations
  • Train meteorological personnel internally and externally (SADC region and beyond).
  • Design and deliver online, blended and face-to-face short courses.
  • Transfer training content to the Moodle e-learning platform and maintain updates.
  • Handle administration of assigned courses, including commercial programmes.
  • Respond to meteorological enquiries.
  • Identify RTC risks and procurement needs.
  • Conduct training needs analysis and prepare monthly training reports.
  • Perform meteorological research and act as a research leader for students.
  • Participate in assessor/moderator training and maintain course quality on the Total Quality Management platform.
  • Represent SAWS at regional and international meteorological bodies.
  • Stay up to date with SAQA, QCTO, SETA and WMO competency developments.
