The Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning in the Western Cape Government is currently seeking highly skilled professionals to join their dynamic team. Key Requirements

To qualify for this position, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Education: An appropriate Honours Degree in Environmental Management, Physical/Natural Sciences, or Engineering (or an equivalent qualification).
  • Experience: A proven background in Environmental Management, particularly Air Quality Management Systems, Regulatory Services, and Environmental Legislation. Experience in compliance monitoring, licensing, permitting, and air quality management planning is highly recommended.
  • Skills:
    • Strong knowledge of air quality management and pollution control systems.
    • Proficiency in environmental legislation such as NEMA (National Environmental Management Act) and NEM: AQA (National Environmental Management: Air Quality Act).
    • Research and technical report writing skills, along with the ability to analyze and interpret scientific reports.
    • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
    • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Candidates must also have a valid Code B driving license.


Job Responsibilities

As the Environmental Officer, your main responsibilities will include:

  • Technical Expertise: Providing specialist advice on the development and administration of air quality management systems, including atmospheric emissions licensing and air quality management planning.
  • Project Management: Leading and guiding specific air quality regulatory projects such as emissions inventory and dispersion modeling, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and regulations.
  • Regulatory Services: Offering expert advice on air quality regulatory matters, including the Atmospheric Emissions Licensing process, and supporting the enforcement of environmental legislation.
  • Compliance Monitoring: Monitoring compliance with statutory obligations, including those stipulated by NEMA and NEM: AQA.
  • Strategic Planning: Contributing to strategic and financial planning, human resource management, and administrative functions related to air quality projects.
