Are you a detail-oriented professional with a passion for legal cost management? The Road Accident Fund (RAF) is offering an exciting opportunity to join their Claims Division as a Consultant: Legal Costs in Johannesburg, Gauteng. This is a Fixed-Term Contract position for 12 months with a competitive salary of R501,775.00.

About the Road Accident Fund

The Road Accident Fund plays a crucial role in South Africa’s road safety and justice system, providing compensation for those injured in motor vehicle accidents. Their mission is to ensure all road users within South Africa are adequately covered, rehabilitated, and compensated in a timely and caring manner. The RAF actively promotes road safety and works tirelessly to assist accident victims through the claims process.

Position Overview

The Consultant: Legal Costs is a pivotal role within the RAF’s Claims Division. You will be responsible for managing legal costs associated with claims, ensuring that all legal fees are fair, reasonable, and compliant with relevant legislation. Your role will involve close collaboration with legal and medical experts, reviewing claims, and consulting with various service providers to help the RAF save on legal costs.

Key Responsibilities

Legal Cost Management

  • Keep up-to-date with incoming claims.
  • Review and interpret claims to ensure no fraudulent or contradictory claims are made.
  • Determine if claims require attorney services and assess the appropriate legal fees.
  • Ensure all payments to attorneys are justified and fair.
  • Consult with service providers to identify cost-saving opportunities on legal fees.

Quality Assurance

  • Implement and maintain high standards for invoicing processes.
  • Ensure that unusual occurrence procedures are followed.

Administrative Support

  • Respond to correspondence and assist with producing documents, reports, and presentations.
  • Support with typing and editing briefs, letters, and memos.

Reporting

  • Track and report on objectives and targets.
  • Provide reports on emerging risks and process improvements.

Stakeholder Management

  • Maintain healthy relationships with all stakeholders and provide timely updates.
  • Respond to stakeholder queries within predefined turnaround times.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree or Advanced Diploma in a related field.
  • Experience: At least 3 years of relevant experience in insurance, legal, or accounting-related environments.

  • Behavioral:
    • Strong planning, organizing, and coordinating skills.
    • Good decision-making and judgment abilities.
    • Client service-oriented with personal mastery.
    • Strong ethics and values.
  • Technical:
    • Knowledge of legal costs and post-claim management.
    • Familiarity with medical bill reviewing and case management.
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Understanding of Motor Vehicle Accident legislation and PFMA (Public Finance Management Act) knowledge.
    • Good financial management skills.
